Begin the storyA place where people arrive
This building has started again more than once.
It has been a railway station, a ruin, a restaurant, a field of debris and a building site. Today, people arrive here because of the wine – but the sense of welcome remains the same.
A ruin becomes a restaurant
Heinz Rech and friends take on the neglected station and rebuild it with enormous personal effort. Bahnsteig 1 opens as a restaurant while preserving the building’s character.
The next generation
Thorsten Rech takes over. Wine moves steadily to the centre and the restaurant develops into the combination of wine shop, events and food that defines it today.
The flood changes everything
The Ahr Valley flood destroys the interior, technology and much of the wine stock. The station remains standing – as does the decision to rebuild.
Rebuilding, not simply restoring
Friends, helpers and craftspeople make a new beginning possible. Spaces and workflows are redesigned around wine, hospitality and the history of the building.
